FAQ’s

All dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians.

A dietitian is a university-qualified healthcare professional who provides evidence-based nutrition services, including individual dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy, and food service management. In Australia, dietitians are accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DA) and have usually completed 4 years of university training plus supervised practice. Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) hold the highest nutrition qualification in Australia.

A nutritionist may also be tertiary qualified but not all are university-trained, so it's important to check their credentials.

Medicare

To be eligible to claim a Medicare rebate, you need to have a current Enhanced Primary Care Plan, otherwise known as a Medicare Chronic Disease Management Plan, from your GP. All rebates will be processed at the end of your consultation.

Private

Your level of private health cover dictates whether your dietitian appointment is able to be claimed. Please contact your health fund and refer to your level of cover. If you are making a claim, you can use the automated paid invoice that is emailed to you after your appointment.

Nope!

A referral is not required.

The only time you will need one is if you are eligible for and would like to access a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP) or a Team Care Arrangement Plan (TCA) if you have a chronic condition requiring team care - however, this must be completed with your GP.
